real-time strategy mod

released July 2003
updated September 2006

download (1Mb)

Take command of an army in an epic battle between good and evil, with up to a hundred soldiers on the battlefield at any one time!

Choose a side. Choose an army. Choose a battlefield. Give orders to your troops, summon reinforcements and deploy artillery to support them as your army strives to capture the enemy's shrines, smash down the gates of their fortress and destroy their altar.

Wage war alone against the computer, or take the battle online and fight alongside (or against!) your friends

Good vs Evil is a unique action-strategy mod for Neverwinter nights. It supports up to twenty players of any level, and can be played solo, co-operatively, or with players on both sides of the battle.

Note that the module requires a small hak pack, so if you want to play Good vs Evil on one of the servers running the mod you must download it first from NWVault using the link provided.

An older version of Good vs Evil is also available

in Japanese! The zip file includes translated versions of the module and its manual (you still need to get the original hak pack from NWVault), and a Japanese version of the Good vs Evil tutorial can be found here. Thanks to Manbo for taking the time to translate it all.

Dozens of farms and villages were gutted that night, hundreds of people lost to the orcish hordes. But amongst the ruins there were a few survivors. Including you...

Wounded during the raids and left for dead by the orcs, you awaken to find yourself afflicted by amnesia, your life before that fateful night a blank. Who are you? What were you doing at the farm? And what lies behind the devastating orc raids?

The Lord Of Blight is a single player only module that must be played with the provided character. For full installation instructions and playing tips, read the included readme file.

Quake II

Deadlode II
goal-based teamplay mod

released July 1999

download (53Mb)
source code

Deadlode II was the last project that John's games company The Coven completed before disbanding - a licensed multiplayer add-on pack for Quake II, now available for free as open source. Deadlode II is a highly customisable Team Fortress style mod featuring new maps, weapons, equipment and player models, an advanced radio system, customisable player classes and a modular construction system allowing players to place their own sentry guns, surveillance cameras and other doohickeys during a game. John designed several of the maps, as well as managing the project and arranging licensing and distribution agreements.

Disposable Heroes
multiplayer expansion pack

released February 1999

download Q1 (9Mb)
download Q2 (39Mb)

Disposable Heroes was The Coven's first commercial project, a multiplayer expansion pack for Quake and Quake II featuring a range of exclusive new maps, mods and skins developed by the group. Highlights included the aptly named M.A.D with its over-the-top rocket launcher based gameplay, and Armourback's striking new character models, some of which are still finding their way into open source games a decade later. As on Deadlode II, John worked as level designer, project manager and company president.

Doom II

The Darkening

released January 1998

download (1.6Mb)
readme

A collection of single player and deathmatch levels for Doom II with some custom textures. John designed levels 3 (Entropia) and 8 (Discordia), which turned out to be the last Doom levels he ever made and are arguably his best. Other maps included in the pack come from top amateur Doom mappers such as Nick Baker, Travers Dunne and Jan van der Veken, who organised the project.

The Talosian Incident

released June 1997

download (1.4Mb)
readme

It was meant to be a routine scouting mission of a planet categorised by the UAC as inhospitable and uninhabited. Instead your ship crash-lands and, to make matters worse, something on the planet's surface is jamming your distress beacon. Naturally it's up to you to explore the planet, stop the interference and get your crew safely home.

The Talosian Incident is a single player adventure for Doom II developed by John's old games company The Coven, featuring twenty new levels, new music and new sprites. As well as co-ordinating the project and developing the back story, John composed most of the soundtrack and designed several of the maps.

Cygnus IV

released September 1996
updated April 1997

download (800kb)
readme

Several days ago UAC intelligence picked up a garbled distress call from a remote mountain valley on the newly-settled planet of Cygnus IV. Your unit was ordered to secure the crash site, but strong cross-winds have seperated you from the rest of your unit. You've landed in some sort of open courtyard in the middle of a large complex of buildings. Taking cover in the monument in the middle of the courtyard, you remove your parachute and draw your gun. Footsteps echo across the gravel; something tells you that this isn't the UAC coming to rescue you...

John's final solo project for Doom II, this one features fourteen new levels with some custom graphics, sound effects and music. The opening area is actually based on the war memorial in John's local park. You learn something new every day.
